They do that here in California, USA.. as well.. Also included is plastic water and soda bottles, and glass beer type bottles. It supports a large population of homeless folks (or those with the capacity) digging in trash cans to collect them (some make awful messes, while others are respectful). That's why many states have not employed that technique.. also the lines around the few facilities that offer redemption are most often ridiculous.

However, the funds come from a "redemption fee" added to the cans in the first place.. and the redemption facilities are privatized offering different rates of return. Return funds rarely ever equal what it cost me if done in bulk and can only be done on individual basis in small amounts.. like under 50 units.. and only if kept whole.. smashed gets lower value and is done by weight. Individually, last time I checked.. cans and water bottles were costing and worth 5 cents each. 2 liters were worth 10 cents.

Funny enough, it's been around since at least the 1970's.. when recycling glass coke or Pepsi bottles were worth about a dime a piece for the tall (16 oz I think) and candy bars only costed a quarter. We used to be able to take them right back to the store.

Big plastic is on the recycling game (here in the US).. adding numbers to the containers that LOOK like the recycle symbol but are not.. fooling consumers into thinking they aren't as much a part of the plastic problem..

Overall, I love the idea of recycling and also doing what we can to help others get on board. What I'm not in love with is the reality and it's complexities. But my tone here (re your tag line) is meant only as friendly and informational.. even though my expression is a little frustrated.. that I can't figure out and solve all the worlds problems!

Seems many things that work well with small populations does not in large and vice versa.. Things don't operate the same way on a quantum level as they may in general.

So a little background here.. we drink soda every day (diet). My husband likes cans (and koolaid) and keeps them on hand for when the kids visit once weekly. I drink 2 liters usually one daily. We go once or twice per year to the recycle center, storing the items the rest of the time.. average payout is between $30-60 US. If stored outdoors, the plastic trash bags break down from weather before redemption so they are stored in a pole barn. Man, my time and space are worth so much more than $60-120/ per year (never mind gas is $5.75 and diesel is $6.75 so it'll cost me that to get there).. I tried getting the kids (22 & 30 years old) to take in recycles more often and keep the funds and they won't do it. Money don't motivate us much, once our needs are met. Fear cannot forever. It's gotta come from the heart!

And I haven't even mentioned mess yet, really. Anyways.. over thinker, here..

Will wrap up by saying.. I'm glad others are also TRYING to come up with solutions to "sustainability". :highfive:
 
We used to recycle cans, but it just wasn't worth the effort to the folks when we stopped. The recycle place had a wheel that you could spin once per so many pound you brought in with different dollar amounts on it. Each spin, you got what you landed on
