17 week old Sapphire Splash, not yet laying, but squatting and getting red. Her “sis” is already laying. Today I found yellowish watery stool with a red smear this morning and kept an eye out for anyone acting sick. The red smear looked sort of jelly like and it bounced a little when I smushed it between my fingers sort of like mucous.

I saw her in the coop alone when everyone else was outside, tail down and a bit puffy. Panting a bit. Watched for a poop, saw brown. Then saw white runny poop later that was def hers. Witnessed her nibble at grit and oyster shell, drink some water and peck at some treats I threw in the run for all the others too. Then she was under the coop alone and huddled. Today was hot and I made sure they had fresh cold water all day. Plenty of shade in the coop and run. Good ventilation. But she was still panting and looking droopy in the wings so I have her isolated in the hospital cage for now to watch how she eats drinks and poops. It’s been about 6 hours of noticeable sick signs. Her comb is just barely turning red, but it’s not pale. Eyes and nose clear. Slight wheeze when panting.

No other birds acting sick. I might have seen another hen pant for a short while a few mouths open on this hot day. But everyone else bopping around fine.

I have so far given her a dose of nutridrench and a dab of the vetRX in case it’s respiratory. Her water has electrolytes and probiotics in it and she has some fermented mash (normal food). So far she hasn’t touched either in isolation. She let me feel her wings and crop and check her vent. Clean, no mites. Crop is soft and seems full of water or liquid not hard or empty.

I intend to treat at home, not seeking veterinary care. I’ve got Corid, de-wormer and that acidified copper sulfate on hand if any of that might be useful. Thank you for all advice and suggestions!

Do provide plain fresh cool water in a water station in addition to any other station that has supplements/electrolytes, in them.

She may be having hard time with her first egg. I'd give her 300mg Calcium Citrate+D3 now, the once daily for 5days. Just pull down on her wattles to open the beak and pop the tablet in, let go of the wattles and let her swallow.

Check her crop first thing in the morning to see if it's emptied.

This is what I could find tonight. I’ll give her one 250mg capsule tonight and check again tomorrow.

That's should work o.k.

How is she doing?
I wasn’t able to get the pill down her throat. Idk it seemed so large! But I watched her overnight inside and she improved without the calcium. So much that she was standing and pecking at the food I provided in the morning. I saw a much more solid brown poop with white urates around midday so I moved her back in with the girls to watch behavior for the rest for the day. She ate, pooped, drank water (it was hot again!) and relaxed/scratched around. Much more normal and no more gasping/puffiness. Still a little under the weather but not isolating or acting really off.

This chicken had a weird similar situation when she was much younger with these sort of pulsating breaths and random chirps. She seemed unless and I posted on BYC about it. Eventually she sort of grew out of that behavior and is still alive, just a little slower to develop than her sis. This episode might be linked to that? I just have this feeling that there’s something wrong with her internally and one day she’s just gonna be gone.

Thanks for checking in and listening!
