I have 9 new babies that are broody hen hacthed about 2 weeks ago. They have all been fine and healthy up until today. Went to feed and water them and noticed one was separated from mom and other babies. When I approach the baby it runs off chirping. Then just slowly walks and stops away from the group. Im not sure if it's eating and drinking regular since momma has them all outside with her. Can someone maybe explain why they would all of a sudden separate away from the group?? This is my first time with a hen hatching babies. Thanks in advance!

If you put it back with her and she is fine with it then the chick simply got separated. I have seen this happen when the broody is bringing them in/out of the coop and one of the chicks is distracted. It’s like a child at the fair that sees something shiny walks towards it and when they turn around they realize they are alone because their parent didn’t notice and kept walking.

We tried to put her back close to them so they could get to them and it just stops right outisde the little group or the momma moves away and the other babies follow leaving it jsut standing by itself. I live in AR and we just had all those storms the last couple days so im wondering if that affected it.

Is the baby unique? Different color, crest etc? Not common, but sometimes because it is not like the others,u a chick can get rejected.

Sometimes if a hen knows a baby is sick she may push it away to protect the others.

Is it for sure only one chick? Occasionally a hen will start to ween or chase off all the chicks as early as 2 weeks.

I just read your comment about when you put it with the others. That does not sound like a mother rejecting. It sounds more like a chick not following. Make sure the chick gets warm enough. Sometimes theirs senses get dull when they are cold? Has it been following the mother all along, or is this the first they were free to roam?

It has been following mom since day 1. And they all look exactly the same. This is the first time I've seen it separated from the rest. I've tried to put it with the rest several times but it's just doesnt integrate or they move away from it. Im not sure what has happened other than it could potentially be sick from all the rain and wind we had the last 4 days.

I've also noticed since ive separated it that it is very lethargic and not eating or drinking.

It sounds more like something is wrong with the chick if it would follow around with the mom before and now the chick isn’t following.

Thats what i am thinking as well. It chips really loud and what not but it doesn't want to do anything but sleep at this moment. It's breathing normal as well so I'm not sure what it could be.

I would give it some sugar water/electrolytes in the meantime, because it is probably dehydrated! Maybe some raw or cooked egg yolk as well.

Can i use unflavored pedilyte? I don't have the chick electrolytes at this moment. I have to give it water by letting it drip off my finger into it's mouth
