the 275 gal plastic tank is frozen and I need a heater. the opening is on top and small.

You will have to make the openeing bigger and get a pond de-icer or something like that.

I was thinking of getting one of those when I saw one for free. But I heard things about 'yuckies' growing in there and I don't want that.

I m at a loss, what running warm water through a hose? :idunnonot 1 of the greatest ideas
the HEATED hose goes from the tank into my chicken barn where I use the hose to fill the 55 gal drum which has horizontal nipples.

bleach 1/2cup

True, but I don't want to waste the water having to clean it a few times a year, or even once a year.
I couldn't justify the size.
I might when I get a farm ;) but I don't want to spend $$ on it unless it was SUPER cheap or free. Cl used to have them for free a couple years ago.

Do you have a heater in the 55 gal barrel? How long does 55 gals last?
For 275 gals, it will need to be a higher wattage heater and caged. Not going to fit in that opening. I would disconnect the 275. Drain it and put it away for the winter. Hauling a gallon out once or twice a day is less work then fighting with that.

Oh also, I have a pond with a 250w heater (caged).
That MIGHT work but you would have to Insulate all around and under the Tub. I would bet the pond heater wouldn't keep it thawed to the bottom if out in the elements.

My pond has wood planks over the top for winter, heater only has a 1 foot round opening of free water on the top. Bottom is fluid but the far end of the pond is frozen. It is just under 2 feet deep but has dirt/blocks all around and the wood on top for insulation

I have never had to clean mine in 5 years. nothing is growing in it or green. no odor. it is empty and dry in the summer. not in sun. It has been a blessing. this is the first time it has frozen. everything has frozen this year.

I have a fish tank heater in the drum and it has been keeping the water from freezing. I cannot carry water out. If I get a heater for the 275 gal tank I think it will thaw it . I do not believe it is frozen through but there is no way to drain it now anyway. the heated hose is working fine. there are some choices on Amazon which may be small enough.
