I have a 3.5 year old Buff Orpington that started sleeping outside about two days ago. I’d noticed that she was slower than normal about a week ago and she wasn’t eating the treats I was giving. She’s always been my picky one so I didn’t think anything of it till I saw her sleeping outside yesterday in different spots around the yard. I brought her in to give her some Nutra-Drench and I think I may have accidentally scratched her eye in the process. She won’t open the eye unless she is startled. It’s watering when opened and doesn’t seem to have any noticeable trauma.

I’ve brought her inside so I can keep an eye on her. She hasn’t eaten, or had anything to drink in several hours. I’ve tried scrambled eggs with Italian herbs mixed in. I’ve tried some wet cat food. I’ve given her the Nutra-Drench twice now.

Help!!! She has no signs of mites. There hasn’t been any worms in any of the poop outside. The other chickens are fine besides molting. What could it be?

1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
3 yr old Buff Orpington about 3lbs(ish) feels the same
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
She started sleeping outside about two days ago. I had noticed that she was slower than normal about a week ago and she wasn’t eating the treats I was giving. She’s always been my picky one so I didn’t think anything of it till I saw her sleeping outside yesterday in different spots around the yard.

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
Two days
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
No
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
No
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
Nothing that I am aware of other than my possibly scratching her eye when I was giving her the Nutra-Drench.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
She hasn't eaten or had anything to drink today. I'm not sure if she has eaten or drank the last two days.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
I'm not sure because I have other birds.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
I’ve brought her inside so I can keep an eye on her. She hasn’t eaten, or had anything to drink in several hours. I’ve tried scrambled eggs with Italian herbs mixed in. I’ve tried some wet cat food. I’ve given her the Nutra-Drench twice now.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird till you can get to a vet?
Treat completely myself.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
Pictures above
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
I have her in a small dog crate in an empty room with pine shavings as the bedding. She has water and food available.

I’m sorry she isn’t feeling well. How has her crop been first thing in the morning? It should be completely flat. And when was the last time she laid an egg? Are you able to see a scratch on her eye? Sorry I just saw your additional post that said no noticeable trauma. If you have a bit of saline, you could rinse her eye with that and then apply some plain neosporin without pain relief to the eye.

Her crop feels pretty flat first thing. She hasn’t laid an egg in months!! I have three Buff Orpingtons, all the same age, and none of them have laid an egg in several months!!! I’ll do the eye rinse and neosporin in the morning. Thanks 👍

Hmm has she ever been dewormed? How does her abdomen feel in between her legs? Any idea why she stopped laying?

Also if you are afraid she hasn’t taken any fluids today, you might try dipping her beak into a dish or using a dropper to dribble some onto the side or top of her beak and getting her to take some in that way.

She has not ever been dewormed. Her abdomen feels normal. I have no clue why she stopped. I have the Buff Orpingtons that don’t lay 🤷‍♀️ I figured it was the heat, then the molting, now the shorter daylight but I’m not sure that’s it cause I have one bantam hen that lays without a problem. I’ll do the water when I check on her at lunch time.
