Hi! I had a chick hatch out 5 days ago and it was pecked and across the coop when I found it, it had a wing injury and I took care of it but I didn’t notice its eye was pecked until the next day. It was just shut, not swollen yet but not it’s very swollen and looks like a big piece of pus or something under the whole eye lid. I have a couple pictures but they are hard to get with the eyelid open alone so I’m sorry, but can someone please tell me if I need to get that pus out of there? I’m treating with Terramycin but I’ve read that it might not work if the pus is in the way.

I’ve posted in Facebook groups with no help and I called our local vet and she said they don’t deal with chickens.. Please, what can I do?

Use a warm compress on the eye to loosen the pus and remove it. All of it will need to be removed in order for the eye to heal. After it is removed I would keep applying the ointment.

Ok, it is so very big in that eye socket.. what is the best way to remove it? Just a saline flush until it comes out or like tweezers to grab it? I am afraid it’s so large that just flushing it won’t remove it but I’m so nervous to try tweezers..

Maybe flush and try and “press” it out. Push gently and see if that will work.
