5 Silkie hens in need of a new and loving home

I was thinking how horrible this is you've had to deal with all of this. It's almost like a nightmare. I suppose the city wouldn't help saying that you're bringing them there and technically harboring them. But now, if you rehome your chickens, tear down the shed and plant grass so there's nothing for the rats, they'll scamper down the block to someone else's place. It makes no sense.

The worst I've had to deal with rats was a neighbor farm that has them. One came over here and into our coop and our border collie must've seen it or sensed it and ran through the chicken door and came out with it. It was a younger one. That was a couple of years ago and we've never seen hide nor hair of one since.

The neighbor says she's nearly gotten rid of hers right before her coop nearly collapsed from them digging tunnels underneath of it. She said some huge owl has been sitting in the tree line and swoops down for a few rats every night, plus a very large feral orange cat we've seen hanging around out here started living in her barn. Out here in the sticks, I guess we stand a chance to get rid of them, but where you are, it's futile. I'm really sorry as it's not only a horrific story, but such a sad one.

Maybe someday you'll be able to move to somewhere you can have chickens again. :hugs
Thank you! Yes, it is truly a nightmare situation. I had my girls for 2 years without any rats and then my next door neighbor was evicted and the house was basically gutted out and it looks like they had an infestation. The rats were seeking out a new food source and invaded my coop. They still run into the next door yard as it is basically overgrown so it doesn't look like I'll be able to get rid of them fully if that yard doesn't get fully cleaned out and trimmed. And I can't use poison because I have 3 very dumb dogs that use the yard for their business and are constantly eating things they shouldn't. The feral cat population is also no help because they're used to neighbors feeding them the good stuff.

I hope to one day move out of the city and be able to have them again. They really bring me such joy! It's so hard to part with them but I have to so that this nightmare can be over!

I'm posting again because while I did get a lot of support and suggestions, unfortunately I've had no takers on my girls!

I really need to rehome them as soon as possible. I'm right outside of Philadelphia and am willing to drive up to 3 hours, I just want a good home for them! I wish I could have kept them but the rats have gotten too much for me to handle and I just cannot keep up anymore. I have tried everything to get rid of them and the damages that they're causing my coop is astronomical. At this point, it feels like I am paying to feed the rats rather than my girls. I can't do this anymore so it is with a heavy heart that I have to rehome them. There are 4 pure silkies and 1 silkie easter egger (she has a silkie body but regular chicken legs). They lay but not consistently. 2 of them are 3 years old and the others are less than a year (born July 15th). There is 1 white one (easter egger), 1 buff one and 3 black ones. If anyone thinks they can offer them a permanent loving home, please let me know.
I live in Southern Maine- Sanford. Is this anywhere close to where you would be willing to drive up and meet? I can go southward some too.
I have a flock of 15 older, friendly birds(5yrs)- they accept new girls easily now that they are use to it. I do have a silkie rooster, he would love some purty girls. They all have a big run, and free range outdoors. I have a guardian dog- Amish, and some geese that love the chickens and ducks- Between them all thay are well guarded and taken-care-of from all angles.
Would absolutely love some sweet silkies- every time we try for one- it ends up being a boy.... so, what a relief this would be!
Please let me know:D

Hope I am not too late :D

I am sorry you're dealing with rats and having to rehome your hens! Just wondering, have you tried putting hardware fabric down across the bottom of your coop/run? Then the rats couldn't dig in.

If you can hold out a month till I get back home (I'm across the country right now) I might be able to take them (if you haven't found a home for them by then). I live near Hagerstown, Maryland.

You also might try posting on Craigslist :).
What ever happened? Were you able to get Dashed's silkies?
