I'm posting again because while I did get a lot of support and suggestions, unfortunately I've had no takers on my girls!

I really need to rehome them as soon as possible. I'm right outside of Philadelphia and am willing to drive up to 3 hours, I just want a good home for them! I wish I could have kept them but the rats have gotten too much for me to handle and I just cannot keep up anymore. I have tried everything to get rid of them and the damages that they're causing my coop is astronomical. At this point, it feels like I am paying to feed the rats rather than my girls. I can't do this anymore so it is with a heavy heart that I have to rehome them. There are 4 pure silkies and 1 silkie easter egger (she has a silkie body but regular chicken legs). They lay but not consistently. 2 of them are 3 years old and the others are less than a year (born July 15th). There is 1 white one (easter egger), 1 buff one and 3 black ones. If anyone thinks they can offer them a permanent loving home, please let me know.

I want them desperately, they are so cute and I would love them forever

I am a former chicken owner, but haven't had any fancy chickens like yours yet. It would be a blessing. I am in Barstow, CA

I am sorry you're dealing with rats and having to rehome your hens! Just wondering, have you tried putting hardware fabric down across the bottom of your coop/run? Then the rats couldn't dig in.

If you can hold out a month till I get back home (I'm across the country right now) I might be able to take them (if you haven't found a home for them by then). I live near Hagerstown, Maryland.

You also might try posting on Craigslist :).

Aww I wish you lived closer! Unfortunately Cali is too much of a drive for me! 😩

I converted a shed into a chicken coop and that was my problem because I was not prepared to be Invaded by rats. Unfortunately the hardware cloth isn't going to cut it! They've chewed through the door, through the walls, through the ceilings, through the windows... every time I patch a hole up with hardware cloth, they just make 3 more! I've tried traps, cementing, hardware cloth, taking the food out at night, spray deterrents, ultrasonic noise machine, a stainless steel feeder. Nothing works and now they are up during the day and are not afraid of people!

I've had a bad experience with craigslist which is why i'm posting here! Just want a good home for them! I would be willing to drive to Maryland if I haven't found a home for them by then if you want them! Thank you!

I guarantee if you make a Facebook account or find someone who has one, join just one larger poultry group on there for your area, and post a picture, then just say, "Message me for more details," they'd be taken in a day.

I was thinking how horrible this is you've had to deal with all of this. It's almost like a nightmare. I suppose the city wouldn't help saying that you're bringing them there and technically harboring them. But now, if you rehome your chickens, tear down the shed and plant grass so there's nothing for the rats, they'll scamper down the block to someone else's place. It makes no sense.

The worst I've had to deal with rats was a neighbor farm that has them. One came over here and into our coop and our border collie must've seen it or sensed it and ran through the chicken door and came out with it. It was a younger one. That was a couple of years ago and we've never seen hide nor hair of one since.

The neighbor says she's nearly gotten rid of hers right before her coop nearly collapsed from them digging tunnels underneath of it. She said some huge owl has been sitting in the tree line and swoops down for a few rats every night, plus a very large feral orange cat we've seen hanging around out here started living in her barn. Out here in the sticks, I guess we stand a chance to get rid of them, but where you are, it's futile. I'm really sorry as it's not only a horrific story, but such a sad one.

Maybe someday you'll be able to move to somewhere you can have chickens again. :hugs
