We have 6 duckings and are really trying to determine the right square footage for their coop. Not so much their run, but their nighttime sleeping quarters and laying quarters.
Also, is it crucial to have egg boxes? Or the bump out thing? Our ideal design is the A frame, with a wide opening front door for cleaning.
Thanks!!

Awesome questions, we recently got runners and are building their coop/house this weekend. I am stumped because of how tall they are already so I'll be following!

we have 4 ducklings right now 2 runners and 2 mallards, 2 more mallards on the way next week. I am going to be building them an A frame as well. The dimensions I will be doing is 5 foot long and 4 foot wide. Gives plenty of room for growth and to walk around. As far as nesting boxes, I will be making boxes that sit on the ground so the have a cubby to go into to lay away from the others.

We were just talking about the height of the ducks, that maybe the A frame would suck because would they even stand up near the sides, or all just huddle in the middle? We think of the 4 sq/ft per duck rule....so we are just going to do a 4x8 floor with lino over top for easy cleaning. The run we are thinking of 16x8 roughly.
Share your photos! How many ducks did you get?

Two Runners, two East Indies and a Khaki Campbell. Currently on the hunt for at least a couple more Runners (hopefully one each of choc, blue and penciled....and Australian Spotteds have really tripped my trigger so eventually the plan is to have a small breeding stock of those lol)

Nice fluff head! Are you going to insulate at all? We are thinking about rigid insulation in the floor over top of hardware cloth and then vinyl flooring

Our winters are brutal but we were told our chickens would fare well in an uninsulated coop, that it was best to avoid moisture build up (that part was true). They survived to be sure, but no one laid all winter long and one lost a comb to frost bite. Even after adding a Cozy radiant panel heater in front of their roosting bars I could tell they were still pretty uncomfortable. We'll definitely be insulating the duck house and this summer sometime we'll be insulating the big coop now too.

We laid vinyl flooring in the chicken coop and it's worked amazingly well by the way, I plan to do the same for the ducks (with a layer of sand below the straw for footing sake) because they're hoooooooly messy batman.
