I have two Orpington chicks that are 6 weeks. One black mottled and one jubilee. Never had orps before so I’m just wondering if it’s way too early to tell with these chicks? The black mottled has a slightly larger and slightly pinker comb than the jubilee. It is also a very slow feathering bird. The jubilee has been very fast feathering.

I’ll try to get some better pics of them tomorrow if it is possible to tell anything at this age. Thanks!

Just out of curiosity, if the mottled is a boy, when should I expect to see more roo-looking hackles and saddle feathers? He still has very rounded feathers. He is a very slow feathering chicken, compared to his fast feathering sister.

Around 12 weeks old you should start seeing male feathers in the saddle and hackle area. Sometimes it takes a little digging through the under fluff to find them. I have had a very slow developing boy that didn't show any male feathering until he was about 16 weeks old.
