a nice breed of pig for a pet-my list of breeds

Our boar is a GOS. He is very sweet and his pen is much less rooted up than the pen the Duroc is in and the other pen the Hamps are in.

I would definitely get another GOS to breed and replace the Duroc and the Hamps.

Our Hamps are very friendly pigs, they are just really big sows. Our largest Hamp sow, Patty is like a big dog. She rolls over to have her belly scratched and she lets us lean on her to check the piglets. Her daughter, Pig Pig, is the same way.

I don't like the Duroc at all. She isn't as friendly as the other pigs.

wow!
alot of GOS votes on here and not one negative about them.until i stared this thread i have never even heard of them.i had heard of some of the others mentioned but nothing relating to being a "pet",just mostly BBQ.
anyone have any pictures.i can only find the one picture and very little on the net about them.

The GOS are generally considered a heritage breed of pig by some breeders. I haven't seen very many of them either.

All of our pigs are pets. We just have to sell the piglets to make ends meet.

Patty and Pig Pig love to be patted and Cleatis, our GOS boar, is a real lover. I would raise the Hamps for pets if I couldn't find a GOS. ours are very good tempered pigs.

It will also make a big difference if you raise your pig from a baby asyoung as you can get. They tend to be tamer that way.

I would get another GOS IF I could find another nearbye. I cant.

The Hamps Ive had were probably the next in line for temperment but they dont even come CLOSE to the GOS. The durocs forget it. i had a tamworth duroc cross that became porkchops even though I bought her intending on a breeding pet. Temperment was bad.

Here is her baby picture. I lost her at about 1 year from a lepto outbreak

The Hampshires and Hamp crosses I've known have been nice, if not exactly pets. I had a BIG Duroc sow that wasn't mean, but she just kind of put up with you.

My fiance and I are thinking of getting GOS for our future farm.
