Found a baby Gambel quail in our backyard on 7/2/24 with the goal to reunite with the family. 6 weeks later and we realize we’re the family. Lucky seems to be thriving, no cage, always hanging on the patio. We have a routine, always at our feet when outside, loves broccoli and looks forward to mornings and evenings to jump on our laps and sit on our shoulders. Nestles in wherever possible. We never expected this baby to be around so long so have a lot of questions and learning to do.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Aww... what a cutie pie! ❤️ If you plan on keeping her, make sure to handle her a LOT. Gambels can be high strung as adults and the more you handle and hold this bird, the less stress it will be under in the future. I would suggest keeping it as an indoor bird if you don't plan on keeping more quail, quail are highly sociable and need companionship of some kind. You might get her some Gamebird starter food or if you can't find that, some chicken chick starter food. Quail need high protein feed to grow healthy. They are very powerful fliers so watch all doors and windows, she may fly into glass or out an open door and you can loose her forever.

Best wishes with your little one!
