So I asked someone for hatching jumbo quail eggs and she said she had some so I went and picked up. I have never seen quail eggs before so they looked good to me. I didn't realize until I was watching videos on YouTube that what I had werent jumbo quail eggs but button. As much as I'd love to keep birds as a pet they seem pretty useless as a food source.
Hubby wants to scrap the eggs as they are on day 2, and try to find jumbo ones. I have a hard time disposing of these just because they aren't what I wanted.

Why do people keep button quail?
What do I need to know as far as the difference in keeping button vs jumbo.

Thanks all.

I keep buttons, but they are purely ornamental pets.

Buttons are about 1/4 the size of jumbo coturnix. Buttons come from SE Asia, so they do not handle cold well. The male calls are a lot prettier than coturnix calls and not as loud.

If you are looking for eggs and meat, buttons are not the birds for you. You might try selling them soon after they hatch as ornamental pets. You will probably want to sell them in pairs. They need company and can get along fine in same gender pairs or as a mated pair.

Aww, but they’re so cute when they hatch, and you just can’t help but get attached to those bumble-bee sized birds. I keep a few as pets, and even my bird-hating husband loves them.

There’s very little you’d be getting rid of at day 2 of incubation. Not much more than a germinal disc, perhaps some slight veining.

I had to give away 16 or so eggs that were just days away from hatching because we had to relocate in a hurry, and doing that with 16 hatchlings in our situation wasn’t the best idea. I listed them on Craigslist, and couldn’t believe the number of responses I received of people who wanted to take them in.

How lucky! Buttons are not meat birds but they are easy keepers and are fun to watch. The eggs are very tasty. Yes they take more to get a serving. But if you are trying to broaden your resources, I find them to be an asset not an issue!
