We live in Central Texas and have just adopted 12 chickens from a coworker that was moving. We had been buying the eggs from her for a year, so when they decided to move, we decided to take the chickens. They are all around 9mo-14mo and we are learning the breeds. We love sitting in the morning, drinking coffee and just watching them before work. We like to garden and do yard work and do home improvements.
The chickens are "My Husbands" but like most pets, I seem to be doing most of the upkeep. We have 2 dogs, Charlie (80lbs) that will be the most chill chicken protector ever, and Jax (13years) who is too interested in everything they do. We live on a little over an acre of heavy vegetation and trees. The chickens are in almost 100% shade all the time.
We have 2 kids in college, a senior in HS and we both work.
We have used BYC for information as we prepared our coop and run and have found the forums and discussions to be informative and educational.
