hello...iam looking into getting a puppy... my question is..what sex should i get?...i'll fill you in on my dogs i have now..
Female Saint Bernard (3 years old, spayed)~Male Saint Bernard (1 1/2 years old, neutered)~ Male Great Dane (about 2 years old, neutered)

i have had both Saint Bernards since they were pups...they get along great...now, a few months ago, i took in the Dane..but recently he seems to be trying my other males position...giving little growls..and a few days ago he actually put his mouth on him...(no fight broke out though...my saint is very calm..)..but, yet again, today, i go upstairs and see him lying with my male saint on the same dog bed..with his head resting on him....they were sleeping together.....

...they confuse me....
also, sometimes i really think my female is the dominant...they dont mess with her....if they get out of hand with her or try dominance things with her..she flips on them and they sit right down or retreat..(actually, its only the dane that has tried her a few times... and he hasnt since he first came here)..shes very quick and firm with them...and so, thats why i think she is the dominant dog.....so, my question is..if i get a mastiff pup, which sex would you get?..which sex will be less likely to fight with them?....or will it matter..since i am bringing it in as a pup...and it will learn its place as it grows up with them....

..i'm confused here..i want to do the right thing....thanks for any help, Wendy

Since you already have both sexes it probably doesn't matter. If you only had one sex, I would say go with the other, but in your case....

With the size dogs we are talking about, JMO as a breeder, I would say to get a female simply because as a general rule they are recieved by the others as less of a threat and are usually introduced easier. Also, they seem to remain less agressive and passive in temperment than the males. I don't own Mastifs but this has been my observation in all the gundog breeds I have bred through the years from spaniels to German Pointers. Hope this helps

I would say, research the breed. Some breeds the males are more laid back, some breeds the females are more laid back. I am not sure about mastiffs, so I would do some research and talk to breeders, so what they recommend. When we got our dobe, we asked the breeder, as we had no preference, it was to be my daughter's juinor showmanship dog. Since we had both males and females in the house, she recommended a female. I know other breeds can be just the opposite. Good luck!!

thanks everyone!..i have been researcing them like crazy today..

....also, i believe that Saint Bernards are mixed with them somehow in their lineage..so, maybe thats a good thing then...

... and actually Saints are in the Mastiff family..so, yeah, i guess that makes sense...maybe they will get along then?...

Just so you know- You should wait 2 years before you spay or neuter a Mastiff. They need the hormones for proper growth and development.
I know many Mastiffs and the males (in my opinion) are more laid back than the females. Unless there is a grump in heat they are usually goofy!
Since your others are altered and you plan to get a puppy he will be fine with the pecking order.
Be sure to buy from a respectable breeder that has done the health testing and that the line you consider has no temperment issues-occasionally you will hear of aggression issues in certain lines.
there are a few good forums out there I would reccommend lurking on them while doing your research:)
1. World Mastiff Forum (Mastiff Sweet Spot)
2. Mastiffs.org
There are many knowledgable people that would help allot.
best to you!

thanks alot bwebb7!..wow!..2 years!..i never knew that!...i think i will also get the stomach tacking (that i did for my male saint)..to help prevent torsion(sp?) in case of bloat....that is my biggest fear with these large breeds..... the dreaded bloat!...
