Please has anyone raised Lohmann brown breeds commercially? I have 800 of these birds at 22 weeks and yet not a single drop in egg production yet. I feed them growers mash as not all of them have fully grown combs and wattles and some have them grown past 3 weeks now with a moist Vent and still yet nothing. Outside this they are very amazing birds, tame and inquisitive. I nursed them from day old and housed them in a battery cage at 18 weeks. I live in Nigeria and we have 3 seasons. Any help as to why they aren't laying yet would be greatly appreciated. I received them on the 5th of January 2017

Welcome to BYC @Hayrom!

Not many folks on this forum raise layers commercially in those kind of numbers in those kind of tight space constraints...I have no advice for your situation, sorry.

I believe that Lohmann brown breeds are a high production layer hybrid, I too would assume they would be laying by 22 weeks.

Have you checked their pelvic bones?
Pelvic Points, feel for the 2 bony points(pelvic bones F-F) on either side of vent:
Less than 2 fingertip widths apart usually means not laying.
More than 2 fingertip widths apart usually means laying.
(Spacing is relative with chickens size and humans finger size.)

Thank you very much, i've examined the pelvic bones and they're just a finger apart with few having 2-3 fingers apart. 23weeks already and still not laying

Their combs are not real bright yet, how much daylight hours are they getting? I think they will start laying in the next 4 weeks, but from the picture, it may be closer to 6 weeks for some of them. If you are in shorter days, you might add light?

Checking the map, I would think you would be getting enough light. Sorry no other suggestion, other than time. It always seems to take forever for that first egg.

Good question about light.
I would guess that most battery caged/commercial birds are controlled with artificial lighting.

Hi! Hayrom, your birds must attain body weight of 1500g before they start laying unlike other type of red star breeds that only need to be 1400g weight. You must have underfed them, Lohmann Brown breeds should start laying between 19-23weeks of age. You can reach me on [email protected], since I am in Nigeria I could help out
