All around farm dog breed recommendations

I second sheltie! I trained mine to stop barking on command. Every time he barked I took a very quick, abrupt step forward towards him, I made the stop hand motion, then I would close my hand into a fist (mouth closing type motion only with your hand). Now I just have to say “enough” while doing the stop hand and then closing my fist. My sheltie will herd, but I taught him the command “come to”. That signals that I am the one he is to pay attention to and not the animals. Once he comes to me he will stop trying to herd when we are outside. It also works with teaching a dog not to chase cars. My sheltie is hesitant around strangers, very cuddling inside around my family and is the easiest dog I have ever trained. You shouldn’t have to worry about the delivery drivers. My delivery drivers have been trying to get my sheltie to take a dog treat from them for years and he still will not eat it unless they toss it in the grass beside him. Shelties are very sensitive dogs and very in tune to emotions which makes the training process quicker if you are gentle, but firm with your training. Your yes must always be yes with them and your no always no. They like clear cut communication. For discipline you have to be careful because of how sensitive they can be. Even shouting at them can result in them maintaining distance from you for a week. I’m not even joking. I have found that a firm “No” does the trick because of how sensitive they are to voice tones and also your body language. They have a lot of personality too. Mine loves cuddling, going outside to do chores and even has a favorite blanket. Ironically Shelties are a Scottish breed and his favorite blanket is plaid😂

I love my Sheltie(s) but you need to know they can be horribly annoying barkers. :th
I agree with this. I grew up with a Sheltie as my best friend but man... he was a yapper. Worst barker I've ever had.

Also, they can be on the small side and if you have larger farm animals. I'd worry about getting trampled since they tend to be underfoot.

I just want a dog to accompany me around the farm and not trying to round up everything all the time... I also have kids (7 and 12) so I'd like a dog who'll keep an eye out on them as well when they play in the woods.
Why not get an LGD or guard dog then? My LGD loves nothing better than to follow my children or chickens around and watch over them

My sheltie avoids the bigger animals at all costs and will not even go into the pastures where they are kept. He is afraid of any animal bigger than a sheep. However, I have seen both a lab mix and an Aussie try to nip at a horses heels which resulted in a swift kick and broken bones for both dogs.

Oh boy! Yeah, my Aussie is also constantly underfoot. He's terrified of thunder but will run full speed at a horse. Sometimes I question these "smart" breeds...

I loved my sheltie to pieces, but yes, he could bark, and even though he was well trained, in obedience, agility, rally and tricks, shutting him up was one thing I never could do. We had to take out the dog door, because if he was outside, he was barking, squirrels, birds, leaves falling, airplanes, (not joking). He never met a stranger, and would happily walk off with anyone who had the leash, or cookies.
