A hen hatched out chicks and abandoned the nest. We waited to see if she would go back, but she did not. There were a few unhatched eggs. My daughter was about to discard them when she heard chirping. My granddaughter insisted on trying to save the chick. She gently removed the shell, cleaned it up and put it in a makeshift brooder. She was successful. She gave it a girl name but we ended up with a rooster

So a hen was done sitting on her eggs. The lady who owned the hen was about to throw the egg in a pond. She held it up to hear, pulling it back to throw it, and heard it cheep! She helped it out and the chick ended up living 21 years.

It is amazing how tough (and fragile) life can be. I saw a dog c-section once, the poor thing had had a puppy stuck for three days. The whole uterus was green and black and stunk. It was removed without opening it and they proceeded to close. After the surgery one of the techs noticed the garbage was shaking and whining! The uterus was retrieved and a live puppy was discovered! Between the necrotic uterus and the anesthetic that pup should have been dead or at least extremely asleep not yelping for dear life. The tech took it home and bottle fed it and ended up with a great dog. The poor mother was euthanized a few days later though, the stuck pup had pressed so hard and long on the bladder that it detached both ureters and the abdomen filled with urine, her kidneys no longer connected to the bladder and there was nothing to be done. That’s a crazy chicken story too!
