I was just horrified!!! I noticed recently that a couple of my chickens had mites. Yes, really, just a couple (I flipped and checked every chicken). I have no clue why. My rooster had some and one of my hens had a BUNCH. I must admit, I had not been taking care of things like I should.....had a child in the hospital and then I had severe flu for almost 2 weeks and things kinda went downhill. I honestly was to the point that I was about to place an ad and give all my chickens away.

Glad I didn't now that I am well again.

Anyway, it was obvious that we were past the gentle preventive measures stage. I finally, after much debate, decided on sevin dust. I was scared to death putting it on my babies. But I did, and put it in the coop and raked it in well. By the next day I could not find any trace of a living mite. I will be re-treating in a few days to kill any newly hatched. I just wanted to say, it really does work!!!!

I'm glad it worked for you, and I sure hope your life calms down for a while...sounds like you've been through the wringer!

I started dusting my dogs because the Frontline was not working too well at keeping the ticks away. I love my sevin dust! I've got tick free happy dogs. They smell a little weird, but I can live with that.

Okay...

Where are you people getting the Sevin dust? The only one I can find is for plants.... I can find Granger brand livestock dust and I've used that with great results but cannot seem to find Sevin for animals unless you're using the plant stuff?

Sevin can be used on the garden, too. I buy mine in the gardening section. The very first time I bought it, I was looking all over the medication section for mites remedies and ended up asking a feed store employee for help. He led me right over to the gardening section and showed me the different Sevin products. Just make sure to get Sevin 5% for use on the animals - there's no withdrawl time on the eggs/meat. They make stronger powders, but there would be withdrawl time and there's no need for them because the 5% is very effective. I bought my last canister at Walmart.

A lot of people have great results using Sevin Dust. My neighbor uses it all the time. I was going to buy some, but then found out that it is toxic to waterfowl (which is pretty much all I have) and that it's particularly harmful to honey bees. I'm sticking with DE. It probably doesn't work quite as well as Sevin, but I'm comfortable using it.
