Hello all!

I just picked up some Ameraucana babies to add to my flock (blue eggs, yay!). I was wondering if anyone has experience or a guide on what colors these baby chicks might grow to be? Here’s some photos of them.

Also picked up a Blue Copper Maran, threw her photo in too at the bottom because..well...who doesn’t love baby pictures!:love

Thanks in advance.

Also wondering where they came from. They don't looks quite like Ams to my eye but I'm not super familiar with how some of the redder colors present as chicks.

Interesting, they came from a local feed store who receives their chicks from a hatchery. That would be funny if they're another breed altogether!

It's not quite that simple. I think what you have is Easter Eggers, a landrace/mixed breed closely related to Ameraucanas as Ameraucanas were developed from them about 50 years ago. It's a marketing issue related to how we define what a "breed" is and it's scummy and very common. Suffice it to say it's one of the most common experiences on this forum for someone to say "sex/ID my ameraucanas" only for it to be an easter egger.

Your chickens may not even lay blue, many easter eggers lay brown and green.

If the feed store doesn't specify the color for you (for example, barred rocks are barred. White leghorns are white. ISA browns are brown. Black sex links are black) then you probably have an easter egger. Ameraucanas come in specific colors.

Thank you for responding despite this being a question you see often. I've heard about the disparities between EE's and Ameraucanas, but the way you put it makes sense. They were just labeled "Ameraucanas" - no color associated.

Well that is definitely not very forthcoming...I see now why a reputable hatchery can make all the difference in what you receive. Luckily I will love these little fluffs no matter what they turn out to be. :) Thank you again for the 411!
