I have not had a spur injury but I did have some puncture wounds from a dog bite. It was pretty bad and more then once. I found that vetericyn and colloidial silver hrlp the healing better then anything else.

Abriana, I think I was wearing sweatpants that day as well. Definitely going to invest in some thicker socks as well!! Thank you for your reply!

Interesting! I wonder if I can acquire those things in my neck of the woods. Thanks for the info!

Update!: the wound is still red and swollen yet not as painful as the days before it. There is no pus or red lines to indicate the start of something worse thank goodness!, I was prescribed cephalexin for an antibiotic to take orally the next 10 days.

I appreciate the responses very much. I am somewhat new to raising chickens and hoping to gain as much knowledge as I can!

Now I must go research how to clean a chicken carcass. So much to learn!! I will post if anything associated with the wound happens!

Hello, one of my roosters attacked me and the spur wound on my shin may be infected. (If you really like details, it was a Vorwerk)

Anyhow, it happened on my lower shin two days ago (Monday, January 7th), and was quite painful. The area is swollen and red about 1 inch in diameter around the puncture wound.

There is no pus, or no red lines near it, today it feels like a bad bruise. I am heading to urgent care to get it checked out. My main question is, has anyone else experienced this? I had a lot of trouble trying to find a helpful thread on this issue.

Any advice is welcome! I will check back in with pictures and an update when I come back from the doctor, in case anyone else is hurting and questioning whether or not they should go to the doctor (because it's a real Pain In The Ass these days!!).
Hi, What ever happened? Did you get tetnus?

I’m here a few years later ten days after my own run in with a rooster. I think the spur punctured my shin into the tendons because I felt it all the way down to my foot for many days. I had swelling and soreness but now it’s just still sore around the wound. I think animal bites and scratches do just take longer to heal. I haven’t gone to the doctor but will if it worsens. So far it’s just very slowly been improving. It’s my second year with this rooster who was just a freebie from the hatchery. When it happened, we were having an unseasonably warm Spring day. I was wearing shiny blue shorts and sandals. The rooster came out of no where and attacked me. I immediately remembered last summer and how the rooster would attack me when I wore red shorts. But last summer he was young and it didn’t hurt! This year it REALLY hurt. I’ll be sending him to the freezer soon, that’s for sure😹 Still don’t know what the rooster doesn’t like, shorts or my pasty white legs😹 Hope everyone healed up well (and hoping that for me too🙏🏽).

Intrresting. I was wearing shorts when my rooster Mike attacked me so relentlessly. But he'd also been flogging my grandson who always wore jeans. I think it's a mistake to try to make excuses or read a rooster's mind. WHY he attacks is entirely beside the point; all that matters is that he does. And you can never know why. He doesn't like the color of your clothing? The way you're wearing your hair? The hens were too close or on the wrong side of him? It was Tuesday and the sun was in the wrong place? You had on different shoes? Doesn't matter. He can seriously hurt you. Get rid of him.

Totally agree. I do wish I understood them better though! I was looking at my rooster’s spurs this morning. Wow have they developed in the past year. I’m a bit grossed out to know that big spur was in my leg!! My Tom turkeys have no spurs and are so gentle. How do they survive?!

Okay I decided to Google turkey spurs! I guess my boys being one and two years old just haven’t developed yet. This tells me that this Thanksgiving we will have two turkeys to sell and next year one😹 Don’t let them get to three years old because that’s when the spurs develop it seems 🤔
