Another Friday Night, And My Husband's Up A Tree.

Well, the good news is that he's up in our own tree, because deer are coming to our place. I used to get a lot more annoyed when he was traveling to hunt, because honestly, I worried. Guns are not really second-nature to me; they're foreign and a little scary. Speaking of which, I'm happier when he's hunting during bow season, just because there are fewer other hunters out there. I dunno..."deer camp" stories I grew up hearing always involved lots and lots of alcohol, and gave me an impression of the woods being full of testosterone-charged drunks with loaded guns.

Usually, I DO have a plan for something to do with my daughter when he's gone, but last night he sprang it on me after work--"Hey, I'm gonna go up in the tree." Because it's right outside! Hee.

i usually listen for 'the bang' while doing my 'stuff'. then i run out and help drag the score in!

my hubby is usually right outside hunting. love it. and i also prepare a great meal for him and anyone that went out with him. always included are potatoes and onions roasted in the oven. (his grandpa who has passed, always brought a bag of onions and of potatoes when they went hunting or fishing and that's pretty much what they ate.)

One of my family's absolute favorite dishes is oven-roasted root vegetables. I usually do sweet potatoes, Yukon Gold potatoes, and baby onions and garlic cloves, tossed in 50/50 butter/olive oil. Roast on HIGH heat (500), and toward the end season with coarse sea salt, fresh-ground pepper, and any herbs on hand. When I got beets in my CSA basket, I chopped those and put them in...it made a really colorful dish.

NP that veggie dish sounds great!! I'm going to have to make that soon...

I am the hunter in our family, my hubby works too much to get out in the woods very often. I hunt deer, ducks, grouse, rabbit and I love to hunt upland game but we are not in an upland sort of place

I also hunt geese right off my deck!

You are a true renaissance woman!

Hubby is napping right now, because he's getting up pre-dawn to try again at daybreak.

I won't hear a "bang." Maybe if I listen closely enough, I'll hear the "twang" of the bow?

Yep, same here. It's bow season here and hubby is out there every chance he gets. I encourage him cause I know how much he enjoys it and looks forward to it all year long. I spend my time either online or over in my studio scrapbooking or making cards. I used to hunt with him, but a car accident which resulted in a back injury makes it impossible to climb into the tree stands anymore, but I do love going back out with him to bring back a deer he's bagged and helping him process it for the freezer. There's nothing like the taste of that first backstrap of the season!

Do you know my DH did not know about the backstrap until I told him to ask if we could get it sliced. he said backstrap, what is that. Oh great white hunter that he is.

He would always get it ground up into hamburger. It's funny, we don't call it the backstrap, we call it tenderloins. LOL

I look forward every year now to being a "hunting widow" for a couple of months! Loooong Saturdays on my own - I work on big projects or a hundred smaller ones. All at my own pace!!

I also look forward to it because of how much *he* enjoys it! He's more relaxed getting in lots of woods-time, and happy to see me when he gets back!

As the resident butcher, though, I don't look forward to the two hours spent in the basement. Wish I could do it outside, but the neighbors would be horrified!
