so i found a dog kennel i could get for 215, but then i have to get some hardware cloth which would be another 110 ish to go around it. Then i would need to get some kind of roofing.. the size would be aprox 9.6 x9.6. the reviews seem good i think with a roof it will keep it from rusting quickly. it has the black mesh panels.

or
it seems i can find a shed, metal, so i would have to add some plywood for the sides and some type of flooring?. for $310 for a 10x10 basic metal shed no flooring or a 8x10 with a metal base that i can add plywood too to make it more sturdy. $334 plus ply for floor. or even start with a smaller one for $227 for an 8x6. I havent figured out how to put in a window yet.
What does everyone think? i think the shed may last longer but i still have to add more air flow or possibly make the doors into mesh?
currently i have 10 quail chicks if i cross my fingers, no one else will pass away. im trying to figure something out as they will be going outside in the next few weeks as they stink terribly in the house

Opt for the largest steel shed that would fit your yard, and budget. Skip the floor, and choose earth. Then you can go DLM, or just Deep bedding, that you clean out when needed. You can also try sand for floor option. This way, just scoop out the gumdrops when needed.
You indeed will need to install windows. It is not difficult, if you have building experience. If not,,,,,,, ask for help from whoever you can.
To save money, consider getting used, or replacement windows from sale places like Craig's' or OfferUp. Many peeps ether purchased incorrect size, or project ideas changed. Certainly save money VS regular price store purchase.
Also consider a used metal shed purchase. You just need to disassemble it to take home usually.
A few years ago I resold my 5 year old steel shed that I no longer needed for $60.
I have many ideas in my head,, just ask questions, and I will give you best option recommendation.
I am a pragmatist,, so always look for easiest way to accomplish.

The shed. Is very basic just a small metal base and metal around the roof then tin. I don’t think I would go any larger then the 10x10 due to wind. I think just with metal prices it’s worth it?

That size is fine. Mine was an 8 x 10.
When I suggested the largest that would fit your needs,, I had in mind to get something bigger than a 4 x 6. That would get pretty tight/filled quickly.
Since I'm here,, just a thought crossed my mind. Consider a plastic shed as a possibility. They are light, and easily to assemble/disassemble. You may find a used one that would be easy to bring home. :idunno
Also,, installing windows into thicker walls is somewhat easier.

You'll want to put something in place so the quail don't run past you when you open the door. You might be able to get away with a curtain of mosquito netting or something similar. You will want to add some ventilation to that as well.
if its a dirt floor do i need t o put netting down? or would rocks around the outside work? i havent had a digging predator yet but there are rats around if my cats dont get them.
I was thinking of making a screen door? the wind comes from one side mostly so if i have the door facing away from the wind im hoping it wont get all wet inside. This cant be worse then a dog kennel right? i know the tin will be flimsy but i think a raccoon couldnt get in .
good idea for the net though, i see those ones that have magnets down the middle and you walk thru and they shut again.

also i know quail fly but being jumbo are the less likely? like can i put a 3 foot high divider? or do i go with dog cages if some dont get along?

I wasn't thinking about predators getting in.

I was thinking that you intended to let the birds run loose inside the shed. If that's the case, when you open the door to the shed, some will get out unless you have a barrier between them and the door. The cheapest, easiest thing I could think of was a curtain or something hanging a foot or two inside so you can open the door and still have something between the birds and the open door.

As for using a screen door for ventilation, you will probably want to reinforce that with hardware cloth to keep any predator from tearing right through it. I worry about my cats going through my screens, so anything else would make short work of them.
