Any experience with salmonella?

I lost my Silkie rooster after a short battle with a respiratory infection this week. The vet did a necropsy and believes he found evidence of salmonella but they are doing a test to make sure.

I have a flock of 14 other chickens who I love dearly, they are more than livestock to me, they are my pets. Just wondering if anyone has experience with treating salmonella in their flock?

My other chickens don’t show any obvious symptoms but two of them have been sneezing off and on, although I have chalked it up to their coop being dusty which I have just resolved. Their sneezing has calmed down a lot since the coop reno so I’m not confident that it’s a symptom of salmonella.

In case it is salmonella and my flock is infected, what are your experiences with the illness??

:hugs I'm so sorry about the loss of your silkie boy! I have no answer to your question but I'd like to learn about it if you don't mind my following.

Thank you, he was a really really sweet boy.

And of course, hope we can both get some answers! My vet said the typical treatment for chickens with salmonella is euthanasia, although that’s for food grade chickens only because it’s the simplest thing to do. He said we can figure out a treatment for my chickens since they are considered pets, but he doesn’t have enough details right now because it’s not a very common thing to treat (at least not in my area). Fingers crossed!

Just got the results this week, they found evidence of possible salmonella, but they also now know for sure that he also had an autoimmune disease. He had a collapsed air sac which ultimately killed him so they are not moving forward with any treatment for salmonella. The rest of my flock is on a general antibiotic to ensure no one else has the autoimmune disease but other than that, I think that’s the end of the story!

I'm so sorry for your loss! Good luck with the flock in the future!
