Applying antiseptic ear solution to dog's ear?

Yes, but the OP got the medication online meaning it's not prescription

Exactly.

It is exactly like buying tires off Amazon, then calling your car dealer or tire store and asking how they will affect handling because something doesn't feel right. When they also sells tires.
Of course they are going to tell you to call the manufacturer. Or bring it in and "they'll look at it".

That's why people need to carefully think before buying something online rather than a source who will stand behind it and offer help.

I wish it weren't that way.

Ear mites are not common in dogs. More than likely the problem is an infection, which can be cause by bacteria or yeast, or sometimes both. Ear mites, yeast and bacteria are all treated with different medications. That is why your vet wants you to come in so they can take a swab, look at it under a microscope and prescribe the correct medication. None of these medications can be applied by squirting it on a cotton ball and wiping it on the ear. It needs to be squirted down into the ear and massaged in. A dogs ear canal goes down and then turns inward, so there is no possible way to get a cotton ball down where the medication is needed. When you see the techs at your vet using a cotton ball on the dogs ears, they are cleaning out as much of the gunk as they can, so the medication can get in where it is needed. If at all possible, get your dog to the vet. Guessing at the problem and using the wrong meds will just make it worse.
