Hi. I was wondering if black call ducks (completely black: not bibbed) are rare. I can't seem to find any. Not even hatching eggs.

If you don't have your heart set on Calls, look at Black East Indies. They are a stunning solid black with the beetle green shine, and they are small bantam ducks.

Good-quality Self-Black Calls ARE rare. I got a decent Self-Black drake from duckluck here on BYC - she has beautiful Self-Blacks!

I just hatched what looks like my first home-bred Black Call duckling yesterday.... hoping no white feathers pop out when he starts to feather-in...

Not neccisarily. E fowl has them: http://www.efowl.com/Black_Call_Ducks_p/1062.htm

Some ducklings are bibbed while others are not

Shipping Day-Old call ducklings is cruel as 99% of the time they arrive dead as call ducklings are very very hard to start eating/drinking.
Evening hatching is a PITA! Plus the calls that you get from any hatchery are going to be Pet Quality and probably represent nothing of the breed.

TRUE Self Blacks are very very rare! Especially lines that aren't related to each other. Heck, its hard finding any bloodlines that aren't related. Because they have been bred together somewhere in their genes.

i never knew they were so rare! I hatched one out awhile ago and returned it to teh farm. should have kept him T_T

I already have a pair of black calls, though. Actually, I'm not sure if I have call ducks or black east indies. Can anyone tell if I give pictures? Any key features?
