Are Mica Caps poisonous to Ducks??

Hello, I am here to ask a pretty important question, as my ducks (one indian runner and the other a blue runner) ate some mica caps that I had not seen before. So I am wondering if these mushrooms will cause problems to them, and/or kill them. Also is there any way to help them to recover/get it out of their system.

Welcome to BYC!

I don't know what mushrooms they can or can't eat but usually (major emphasis on usually) if they eat it it's safe. I really hope someone with more knowledge can comment. Have you called your vet and asked?

Mushroom identification is pretty complicated. My friend who had been foraging mushrooms for 20 years ended up in the hospital and almost died - so I no longer state with confidence what mushrooms are.

That being said, my duck ate some small brown mushrooms - despite my trying very hard to keep her from it. I called my vet and they just had me watch her carefully and they put her on a liver supplement. They told me to bring her into the emergency clinic if she started to act lethargic.

Personally, I would call your avian vet. If you don't have one I would get the number and address ready in case you need it.

I looked up the mushrooms and usually found some mixed answers that say they are safe, and that none are safe for them. I will look for a vet and call them to see if they are okay for consumption.

Are they the same as Mica caps? They are very common brown mushrooms that grow usually in the backyard, I'm not a mushroom expert and only used my eye to identify them, so if they are the same I would just look up mica mushrooms to see if they are the same.

Ya, the most famous mushroom harvester in Europe (pretty positive it was Europe, coulda been Ireland) died bcuz of the mistaken identity of a mushroom. But somehow animals are usually pretty good at not poisoning themselves with foraged plants, dogs and antifreeze are another thing though. You're doing good to call a vet👍

Oh man that definitely sounds scary, previously my ducks became sick most likely from eating something, causing her to not be able to bend her neck to the left. She is doing better now but I am just a worrier so I post on here to find out information.

Yeah I can relate, better to be safe than sorry though.

I believe the mushrooms I saw my duck eat were different, as they didn't grow in clumps. But, because of examples like @Everose gave I no longer feel comfortable claiming to be able to identify mushrooms at all.

And I agree, better safe than sorry.

My duck really seemed to enjoy those mushrooms. None of my other ducks ate them. That duck had no sense, however. I also caught her eating tansy ragwort, a very toxic plant.

Oh no, I hope your duck is doing alright, but ok I will definitely look for an avian vet and keep an eye on them throughout the day to make sure they are doing okay.
