Hi everyone, hope you are all well. I am very confused about my two 10 week old saxony ducks (I bought a dozen mixed duck eggs of a breeder near me and only got one kind of duck, I was meant to get Cayugas and Watervales as well). Out of the dozen eggs i bought only 3 hatched… then when I let them out with my other ducks one got eaten by a snake! So I am left with two. I was quite sure one was male and one was female as soon as they got their adult feathers in. But after going out and feeding them I boot iced that both of their heads are going blue!!! It looks like the feathers closer to their bulls have turned blue but no others. Their tail feathers also seam to be going curly (I’ve tried to sex runners like this but I ended up with a duck with curled feathers 😂). Can anyone tell if they are both boys? I am very disappointed as I thought I would have a breeding duo.🥲

They don't have their adult feathers at 10 weeks, and it is too early for males to have tail curls. I'll post a picture of the curl- it's just one feather, maybe a couple more, that curls forward.

As to these ducks, the blue coloring in the head probably means they are males, but try voice sexing them to be sure. I'll post a link to a video that shows how to do that.

Ok thanks for the reply. I thought that their adult feathers were just after they finish with all the down? Or is that their adolescent feather? Their tail feathers are curling a bit upwards which I have noticed is teh start of curling… Do you think both boys?

I have tried to voice sex them but they are very shy and won’t let me get near, I will try again tomorrow.

I have 3 mature drake ATM and they have like 5 curly tail feathers it looks like. That may just be the shininess though

Yeah, they can have more. But those don't come in at 10 weeks.

It may be just a little too early to voice sex them. It's usually right around 10 weeks that they get their adult voices, but it can be later.

I hope you get at least one female!

Fingers crossed. I have had a look all over the internet and can’t find any eggs or ducks. Hopefully one is a girl.

I’ve just gone out to the duck pen and had a listen too the Saxonys and they both are still peeping, doesn’t look good for my hope of hens 🥲. The blue colouration on their faces has spread as well.
