So I got some candy corn hatching eggs, and what I hatched don’t look like candy corn. I’ve learned that candy corn chickens have 3 colors and are laced, and some of them either aren’t laced, or don’t have 3 colors. I’ll post some pictures so that I can hopefully get some answers on what color they are, and maybe if you have any idea if they’re a hen or roo.

These polish I got from a different person, but were called candy corn. The rooster has a few stray black feathers and not sure if that’s a mistake, or if that makes it a candy corn. The 2 hens look so close to my buff laced hen I have, and thought she mistook them for candy corn when they’re actually buff laced.

I would love to hear your thoughts on what color you think these are. And if they’re not, could I breed them to something to create a candy corn?

The first two birds look like candy corn, but the second either has pretty messy coloring or is a cockerel with double lacing. The third looks like a silver laced, and the trio are all buff laced, not candy corn.

From what I know and have read, candy corn is created by crossing a gold laced Polish with a cuckoo Polish. There is a lot of confusion between crele, candy corn, and tolbunt, but they're all different.

Perhaps @NatJ can help with the genetics side of things. :)

I’ve tried to learn what single and double barring is, is that the same as lacing? If it is, I don’t know how to look for it. I’ve tried to look at pictures and watch videos but I still don’t understand. I appreciate the feedback, and hopefully I can get some candy corn babies!

Barring is not the same as lacing, no. Barring is the white stripes on a feather, like a Barred rock or any cuckoo breed. Purebred roosters have two copies of this gene, one from each parent, so are “double barred,” and this makes the white stripes wider. Hens only have one copy, inherited from their father, and the white stripes on their feathers are thinner.

Lacing is edging around the feather, usually black, but it can be other colors.

This is a Barred Rock rooster versus a hen. See how much whiter the rooster appears than the hen? This is a result of double barring.

This is lacing, the black edging around the feathers. This specific hen is silver laced.

Hope this helps a bit!

Oh ok, I never understood the barring but now I do! This helped me a lot. So if double barring is thicker white, what is double lacing? Is that a thicker black edge on the feathers, if we were talking about the silver laced hen in the picture you provided? And are candy corn laced or barred? Can they be either mine?

Hey, I was just reading and remembered this photo I have saved that you may find helpful :)
