Hi everyone,
I live in a prevention zone against bird flu in the UK. My hen thats around 2 years old was attacked by a fox 2 nights ago but escaped with minor injuries. Since shes older it takes very long to heal and she appears to be lethargic. She is currently make gurgling sounds everytime she breathes, her eye area is slightly swollen and her poops are green despite not giving her anything green to eat. Is it MG or bird flu?? Thanks!

Can you take a look inside her beak for anything yellow or notice a bad smell? How bout her vent area is it swollen or pasty? Pictures of the droppings? You might try Terramycin on her eye.

If it is just her, it's more likely injuries from the fox. Canine jaws can apply a lot of pressure that can lead to internal injuries that are not appearing on the outside. Certainly do keep a close eye on the rest of the flock, if its AI, they will show signs soon too. If they are fine, I think we can blame the fox. I hope she improves.

Is she eating and is her crop emptying in the morning? Green poops often mean they are not eating enough or what they are eating is not getting through their crop. Gurgling can also be from a full/sour crop.
She eats a lot! Her appetite hasn't gone down much, shes been laying eggs since the attack, crop has been emptying and no sour crop from what I can tell. The fox didn't do much damaged as we came just in time. I think our flock has MG and perhaps she's having a flare up from the stress of the attack? Just concerned cus of the bird flu going around! Thanks for your help!

Hello, I looked inside her beak its just very pale? Nothing lodged in or mucus etc... her vent appears normal now, shes been laying since the attack BUT her first egg after the attack caused her to have a bloody vent and there was a lot of blood coming out and had to wash her up. I read that it was probably a ruptured blood vessel from trying to pass the egg? Her droppings have become less green but still quite watery despite eating a lot and her crop emptying like normal. Her eye swelling reduced but she's still quite lethargic and the gurgling/struggling to breathe has gotten worse.

This doesn't sound like a minor attack could you explain more about her wounds?
From what I can tell she got bit near her tailbone area and there was a small puncture on her upper thigh but absolutely no blood from anywhere. This is the 2nd time my chickens have been attacked (last time by a feral cat) so do you think its trauma or stress or something cus this attack is no where near as bad as the last one?

Why do you try to exclude that the fox caused an internal injury?

2 years old is a young chicken. I have a 9 year old that recovered completely after an attack last autumn. It took a few months. But she looks and acts great again.
