Edited to add- I have been on this site for several yrs. I am not simply posting for something that I could simply type in a search bar and locate an answer. I've spent countless hrs reading, posting questions, nd researching this site and numerous others. After all that, and not really finding what I am looking for - and hearing advice from numerous long time breeders to find a mentor- that's what I am doing. I am not looking for quick and fast answers from just anyone on the Internet. I am in this for the long haul and really want to learn everything I can, hopefully from someone who has come before me and can help me learn through their own mistakes and cultivated wisdom. The podcast has been thought up for a need that I see in the Poultry community. I would like to fill that gap for others that come after me.

First question - Is anyone here aware of any online breeding mentorship programs or webinars? (affordable - what I've found is not affordable to me, not even slightly 😞)

Second- Personally, I am looking for a mentor/friend. Personally someone who has been breeding for while and is interested in sharing their knowledge with me. Local would be great but online/phone mentorship is good too.

I have scoured the Internet searching for free/affordable resources for learning to breed. I have not found a whole lot. I thoroughly enjoy Poultry Keepers 360 and Poultry Nerds but neither of them get into genetics very often, if at all. Which is great, I am just hoping to learn genetics too.

I am 37. In TN. Mother. Working my hind end off to make the dream work! It's coming together little by little. But I am still not there. The breeds I have narrowed down to are these:

True Ameraucana's
Faverolles
Crested Legbars (cream and Opal)
Silkies (Satin Mille Fleur and Porcelain)
American Bresse

Quail

I work with a couple sexlink crosses too. To better serve my community and provide guaranteed sex pullets.

I plan to do dual purpose meat birds too and would like to learn to process them myself.

I probably will downsize the breeds I work with over the next year again. Believe it or not the above list is actually quite small compared to a couple yrs previous!

My personal goals and philosophies for breeding are as follows:

•Quality over Quantity
•Records, tracking, records, tracking, records, tracking!
• Honesty and Integrity above ALL
• Making quality birds available AND affordable
•Utility Traits MATTER
• Poultry Nutrition is paramount
•Holistic management
•Pasture raised meat finished on milk soaked grains
• Clean Whole Foods available and affordable
• Heart Centered Business ALWAYS

Breeding Goals-
•Standards
•Utility/Production
•Fleshing Rates
•Rate of Maturity/POL
•Good Solid Hardy birds
•Fertility/Vigor
•Temperament and Personality
•Disease Resistance

^Of course all of the above details are just a small snapshot of where I am and intend to go in the future. If my principles align with yours and you are interested in passing your wisdom and knowledge forward. I would definitely love to hear from you!

In searching for online information and podcasts I found myself looking for certain information and really never found it. Which has led me to have an idea for a podcast. If this is something that interest you please get in touch with me so we can discuss the details privately.

There are a lot of very knowledgeable people on BYC. It may be worth making posts, chatting with others, and just learning by putting yourself out there on this platform. Don’t be afraid to ask questions (even if they’re silly), and ask for opinions on things. That’s why BYC exists ❤️ Lots of different sections in the forum to put questions and keep track of your own breeding goals. We’re all poultry people here, and this community has been extremely helpful.

If ever you can’t find the information you’re looking for, just ask! It will probably be easier and faster than what you’re looking to do (although it does sound neat!) BYC has a lot of great information.

This whole website if FULL of free information.
It's not the same as an actual mentor or some kind of course to take. Plus it is full of terrible advice and misinformation as well. And when it comes to breeding I do not see a lot of information on here. Yes- tons of information regarding management and care, not so much for the actual breeding. And I've been on here and other groups for several years and asking questions. It definitely is useful and I love coming here but it isn't in the format I would prefer for learning. To get anything from this site you have to have a question and then look for answers. I just want to learn without having to know what I need to be asking if that makes sense.

Unfortunately most the serious breeders who were here bailed long ago due to so much mis-information.
Exactly - I responded earlier to this same suggestion. What I am hoping to find is a personal mentor. Of course BYC has its place and is valuable but I also have to have a question already and then look for answers. I want to learn about breeding without needing to know what I need to ask. Does that make sense? I also have noticed that majority of my questions regarding breeding have not been discussed here at all. Tons of information about flock management in general but specifics for breeding are not here and definitely not in-depth enough either. There are numerous people here that I do respect and appreciate their advice and input on subjects but I am looking for something more individual and personal. The other observation I've made here is I really have no way of knowing who it is or their experience level that makes a post or responds. Anyone can advise and they could be anyone and any experience level.

I've been on this platform for several yrs and have spent endless hours reading and researching various topics. Like I said to PP I want to learn without needing to know a question first. To get anything from this site I need to know what it is I'm looking for to search for it, and I want to have something more personal. Plus while BYC is valuable in its own way- It seems more geared for general flock management and not a whole lot of information about the very technical questions I have regarding pedigree breeding and various other specialty topics. I know because I've spent endless hrs searching for answers to what I do have questions about and I do post. This post was not something I just decided to put up on a whim or having been a total newbie here. I've considered it for quite some time and after hrs of not really finding what I am looking for, decided to actually post to hopefully find someone.
