When I moved here my daughter was new to chickens and fasinated by all the different breeds so our flock was made up of a little of everything.
Soon she discovered the joys of hatching. I found it not as easy to sell barnyard mixed chicks and a no win as far as recouping expenses. When her enthusiasm died down I decided to switch to breeding purebred. I tried different breeds but ultimately found Orpingtons to be a favorite. After a couple years I got tired of how much they ate. How slow they were to mature and how mediocre their egg laying was.
I decided to focus on a breed that was a complete 180 to them. Leghorns fit what I was thinking at the time and when I was really young that was my grandmother's favorite breed and what she had. She was the one that got me interested in chickens first and always supported me when I got into them. Even when my mother wasn't so eager for me to expand my chicken empire my grandmother was a total enabler.
Leghorns are my way to show her how much I appreciated her support and to keep her memory alive inside me.

Why did you join BYC (if you remember!)?
I found it often when searching poultry related things. I lurked and read for the longest time but finally joined when I came to the realization that my IRL friends were about tired of hearing about chickens.
Some people just don't get it so I figured I find ones that might.

A much younger Moony.....
