My feed store will be selling Austra Whites- a cross between a Black austrolorp and white leghorn. Does any one have any of these. What type of personalities do they have? How are they working out for you?
Thanks

Just Googled it and this is what I found:

Austra White
Austra Whites are a cross between a Black Australorp and a White leghorn. They are a breed that was developed by Dunlap hatchery in the early 1900's. They are an excellent layer of off white eggs. They are a heavier bird and a lot less flighty then a straight leghorn

Yeah I saw that too-wondering what "a lot less flighty" really means-I'd like to know what they are like in the "real world"-gotta be great layers though......

They were one of the industry standard egg laying crosses in Australia prior to hybrids.
Good layers, reasonable end carcass, temperament similar to Australorp. Not sex linked, white with odd black flecks.

Austra whites are NOT sexlinked !!!!!!!!!!!! Four weeks ago I bought ten chicks, with the idea I would only keep 5 or 6 of them. I figured one or two might die. I bought TWO of five different breeds. ALL suppose to be PULLETS !!!!!. I don't think one of my austra whites is going to make it through the weekend. she is much smaller then the rest now and she just stands around. the other austra white pullet turned out to be a ROOSTER !!!!!!!!!!!!! he already has a big comb. so it looks like I'll come up empty on the Austra whites

Dunlap's hatchery, near where I live, offers Austra whites and claims to have started the breed. http://www.dunlaphatchery.net/Standards.aspx

I bought six from them last year, and they claim that they cannot sex them and sell them only as SR. I ended up with 4 roos and 2 hens. One hen was obnoxiously broody. The roosters were especially cocky and early to develop. I have 1 hen left, and she is the most active, friendly hen I have (out of 13). She meets me with the dinner scraps and lays lots of eggs. I am considering getting more with the knowledge that many of them will end up in the dinner pot.
