B.Y.C. Dorking Club!

Those are PERFECT temps, Kim... I would love to see those right now. We've sitting waking up to -24F for almost 2 weeks now. :(

Tori, have you considered getting RC Dorkings? Then you wouldn't have to worry about frostbitten combs.

Kim in CA where it never gets below 0.

I tried to place an order with MMH last night, and they will only allow 5 pullets at a time. With the shipping costs up here, I wasn't going to do multiple shipments anyway. I ordered some from Ideal for the first week of April. I'll be sure to post a review. ;)

I'm almost starting all over again. After fertility issues this past year, and now losses due to extreme cold while I was away from the farm, I'm down to about 3 girls and 2 boys. One of each is thawing (literally) in the garage after this weekend's sudden drop to -30F. They seem to be doing ok, minimal swelling of the feet, but the combs are going to be toast. I have travelling to do at the end of June, so I may be out of luck for shipping eggs in for hatching this year.

Hope your birds finish thawing out ok. I think I'll go tell my SoCal birds how lucky they are (and to quit their chicken guilt trip staring at me through the kitchen window looking for scraps).

FYI- Before I ended up ordering SGD's from Stromberg, I spoke to a lady at McM who told me of the maximum of 5 birds... BUT when I asked her to try it, the computer accepted an order for 5 pullets and 5 Strait Run. If they haven't "fixed" the system, you should be able to at least get 10 SGD's, and then fill out the order with another breed entirely, unless you want to try getting 5 sexed females, 5 sexed males and 5 strait run

... I didn't try that one, I figured my "strait run" would probably be all roos anyway

Stromberg's maximum on the SGD's was 10.

I would be interested to know what the maximum is at any of the other hatcheries/sources if anyone has any info.

Did you get your order from Stromberg's? I was told that, because Urch is not supplying Dorkings this year, they were not offering them.

Kim

Hi Kim,

I got panicky and called them just now... Apparently they quite taking orders for SGD's soon after they started because their supplier is low on hens of laying age, so they are hoping to be able to fill the orders that they already have on the books.

I ordered mine on Dec. 5th which was supposedly the first day or days that you could order them for 2012.

I asked that in addition to the please do not substitute ANYTHING for Dorkings note on my order, that they please note that I would prefer a refund of my Dorking Dollars if they cannot fill the order so that I may spend my DD's on Dorkings elsewhere. I do NOT need any more non Dorking Chickens!

... They are supposed to be shipped in May. I just hope the breeder doesn't substitute a bunch of EE's or Leghorns or something (LOL) that would be my luck

Hi All,

On 12.1.2011, I placed an order with McMurray for 13 SG Dorkings and 12 Faverolles. In the interim, I found another source of Favs so on 1.13.12 I changed my order to 25 SG Dorkings (20 female, 5 male). Delivery date in March.

So, as recently as a week ago, I was able to get an updated order secured. Do you think I should be worried that they'll substitute something else? Also, I've got 20 reds coming from Horstman.

I'm trying not to start counting my chicks yet, but can't help getting a little excited.

Sorry about that! :D I got the "K"s mixed up! I used to have a RC Red Dorking... he was gorgeous. His comb did very well. I like the RC on the reds, but for some reason I don't think the SGs would look right with a RC. But yes... that's definitely a thought.

That's weird, because just a couple of days ago I tried, and everything I did would only allow 5 pullets at a time. Males were no problem, and I don't remember if the straight run changed to 5 or not. No matter what I did, it would only allow 5, though. But I wound up ordering 15 pullets and 10 cockerels from Ideal for April 4th. I have two boys from MMH stock left, suffering still so I don't know if they'll make it or not, but I was relatively pleased with the confirmation and coloring. Combs were good, good toes, etc. Not perfect, but not horrible.

As best I recall, I had trouble with online ordering. I remember now having to call them and place the order with a real live person. Hopefully, it's just a glitch in their system??

I've got my fingers crossed that I get something that I can work with. Glad to hear that yours were decent. It will be interesting to see what kind of quality you get from Ideal.

Good luck!
