Baby Asprin?

My precious little Bantam Silky was attacked by a hawk today. She has several gashes and punctures. I'm sure she'll make it if we can keep infection away. It's Sunday and I couldn't find a bird vet. We brought her inside to heal. I heard that baby asprin is ok for pain, but not if bleeding is involved. How much bleeding are we talking about? Any at all? Or just major bleeding? She has some spots that are still bloody, not dripping, but definitely not scabbed over. Some are just an open hole in the skin, and some are holes but more closed up. I used an antibiotic spray. Is there more I can do to prevent infection and help her pain? It breaks my heart to see my sweet girl like this.

I'm so sorry! :hugs

I would avoid aspirin if she's bleeding at all just to be on the safe side.

Keeping her inside and comfortable would help. You can flush the wounds with sterile saline solution or just warm water and mild soap if you don't have any. Iodine works well for open wound injuries too.

Do you have pictures of some of the wounds per chance? When you say holes closed up, I'm not sure I understand.

Electrolytes would help her too as she's most likely in shock, and I'd alternate vitamin water, like Poultry Cell, as well to give her a boost to help fight infection.

I'm sorry, I can't get pics right now. Her wounds are more on her under side/thighs. I would need a helper to hold her while I part her fuzzy feathers. My daughter is my chicken helper, but she's sick right now.

She has 2 wounds that are like a hole was cut out of the skin, one dime sized and one quarter sized, not bleeding. 2 are like holes that are swollen shut, and a few more like gashes. Those are all bloody.

She is standing. I think it hurts to sit down. So far she won't eat or drink. I'll give her some water with a syringe soon.

Good ideas! Thank you!

For electrolytes, can I get something from a grocery store now? Or should I just wait until morning when our feed store is open?

You can give her sugar water if you don't have Electrolytes. 1tsp sugar to 1cup warm water. You need to help her with shock, so get fluids into her. Hydration first, then worry about food a little later.

You sprayed the wounds with an antibiotic spray, but did you clean and flush them out?

It would be a very good idea to flush any puncture wounds and gashes really well. You can use saline, Hibiclen (Chlorhexidine), Povidone Betadine, etc., to clean and flush wound. Trim feathers away from around the wounds to help keep them cleaner and from ointment sticking.

Once the wounds are cleaned well, apply triple antibiotic ointment.

I'd leave off the Aspirin.
