I need a bit of help/reassurance.
I’ve seen a few posts about orphan quail babies but I have additional questions. We found this little nugget on our patio last night, by himself by the house, we have a few quail in our yard so this morning we searched for a nest (evidence of a nest) or other babies & no luck. We have him in a box with a heat lamp & it’s about 93-95 degrees. I have eggfood crumble for him (it’s all I have on hand) and a small lid w/water, the lid has an edge about 1/8” wide and water is in this channel so he can stand on lid to drink & not get wet. He’s been drinking but I haven’t seen him eat yet. I also put small rolled up hand towels for him to snuggle & a few mirrors around. I am guessing from other pics I’ve seen that he maybe hatched on Saturday or Sunday. My biggest question is what to feed him. The egg food doesn’t have high enough protein but I also have bird formula, can I mix a bit of that in too? I’ve tried to call bird rescues in my area and haven’t gotten a reply yet. I don’t want to go out & get specific food unless I can’t find a rescue to take him. In that case I will get the game it’s feed as it seems to be most recommended. Is there anything I am missing that I should or shouldn’t be doing? I want to give him his best chance, we are rehabbing a pigeon that we found injured at a day or two old, but this seems so much more daunting since he’s so tiny!
Thanks!
