Hi,
I currently live in Simi valley in an RM zoned area that does not allow backyard chickens. I just got three baby chicks but I am wanting to know if anyone who has backyard chickens in an area not allowed if you have had any issues with neighbors. Not sure if I should tell my neighbors or try to see if they don’t even notice & im not sure what can happen if they do file a complaint with me! If anyone has any info or advice I would greatly appreciate it!

Neighbors are tricky. They might not care - assuming hens. They might not even care about a rooster. Hens can be loud during the egg song or during signs of danger. Typically daytime and not likely to disturb neighbors, but it still depends on the neighbor.

I can't find it online now, but locally someone got a letter from codes. Short version is - Rooster (violation), what is allowed, recommended corrective action, and 30 days to correct. Sent by certified mail.

Good luck.

I am actually going through the process myself now. I have three neighbors. But only one of the neighbors has visual access to our backyard. These neighbors are the kind that are nice to your face, but call the city or homeowners on you to complain when they get behind closed doors. They also have complained about silly little things like your trees have sap on them, your grass touches our grass in the front yard, so I'm going to dig a trench between property line, your vines are to big. Your typical I'm retired and have nothing better to do then to be a "Karen".
Long story short the process so far has been this. Received a letter in the mail regarding a complaint from a neighbor (Mr & Ms Karen) and that my backyard chickens are not in a chicken permitted zone. My home is on a 10k lot and up in the hills. I own a 4k beautiful chicken coop and keep it very well maintained. I only have 4 hens so nothing to dramatic. After receiving the letter. I contacted the rep for the city regarding the matter. He was an absolute gentleman and listened to my case. I have a health condition that limits me to only certain foods. Organic chicken eggs being one of them. I needed to document my reasoning for needing hens for collecting at home chicken eggs as well as get a detailed letter from my doctor. Once approved there is a fee associated with the permit. Then from my understanding they send someone out to make sure your setup is compliant. Everyone from the city I have spoken to has been very friendly and directing me on how to go about the process step by step.
I hope this helps.
Cheers!
