Baked French Toast Recipe?

ok here is what I do

if you can find Hawaian sweet bread this is the best but any good bread that you can slice fairly thick works great

I slice the bread
(day old is best!)

(my trick is to) heat a baking sheet in the oven to about 400

in a bowl (this is a more or less recipe you need enough e g g to cream ratio to cover the bread slices you want)
gently beat 4 e g g s with 1/2 more or less cup heavy whipping cream (or half and half) grate some nutmeg in there or cinnamon to taste and about a tsp of orange rind...also you can squeeze in some of the orange juice (I have used a lemon in this as well and very good)

as soon as the oven and pan are hot ..work quickly open the oven pull the rack out and as you dip the bread in the mixture put it right on the pan into the hot oil butter mixture (this is the trick to the crispy coating!)

bake for about 12 min then turn them over and bake until golden brown

this makes puffy crispy and very good French toast

chknluvnfam, I would love your peach french toast recipe! That sounds yummy!

keljonma, I will definitely try your recipe! How on Earth did I miss that thread?

HiDelight, that sounds easy enough! I don't see anything in your directions about the butter/oil, but I'm assuming you put it on the baking sheet and let it heat up together? So, you don't soak your bread in the egg mixture? I'm going to have to give this a try.

Well, here you go then! It's good to make the night before and let it soak in in the fridge.

1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup margarine
2 Tablespoons water
1 29-0z. can sliced peaches
5 eggs
1 1/4 cups milk
1 Tablespoon vanilla
1 teaspoon cinnamon
6 slices white French or Italian bread

Drain peaches and reserve syrup. Heat margarine in microwave til melted. Add brown sugar; microwave 1 minute more; then add water. Continue microwaving until thick and foamy; about 1 to 2 minutes. Pour into greased 9x13 baking dish and cool for 10 minutes.
Place peaches on cooled caramel sauce and cover with slices of bread placed close together.
Beat eggs, milk, cinnamon and vanilla until mixed. Pour over bread; cover and refrigerate overnight.
Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes or until golden brown. Loosely cover with foil, the last 10 minutes if browning too fast.
Serve with leftover warmed peach syrup.

Holy cow, that sounds sooo good. I will definitely be trying that very soon. Thanks so much, Chknlvnfam!!!
