Hi all. I’m new to chicken world. I have a rather assertive barred rock chick. It’s always flying and pecking at my hands when I open our brooder, always stands “on guard” in front of the other chicks under the heat plate. Once I am able to handle the chick outside the brooder it seems more friendly but otherwise just seems angry and mean to me lol. Sharing photos to try and see if anyone can help me in identifying. I bought from Wilco as a “pullet” but it seems larger than the other chicks and I keep wondering if it’s a Roo.

IT IS TOO DARK TO BE MALE, IF IS PURE ROCK. ASO THE LEGS HAVE DARK STRIPES, WHICH IS TYPICAL FOR FEMALES. IF IS NOT PURE, THAN TOSE TREATS DOES NOT MATTER,

Pullets can be assertive/nippy too. I got some giant cochin pullets last year and one would always run up to my hand and bite me first thing. She's very friendly now and laying eggs, but still loves to charge over and give me a chomp.

I'm not great on the color differences between the sexes for barred rocks, so I can't comment on that. Sitting out in front of the heat plate though looks more to me like she is perhaps a bit farther along developmentally and doesn't need the heat as much.

It's a male.

i had one exactly like that one, Sadly. When he grew up, he was aggressive and had to be turned into Chicken Noodle Soup
