What kind of bedding should I use for a rabbit hutch? Hay, straw, shavings? I will probably have a wire floor. What do you use?

Hay or straw. Shavings tend to fall through the bottom. Plus, they can eat some of their bedding if you use hay or straw. Must be convenient to be able to snack on your bed instead of having to get up and go get something from the fridge.

Rabbits have it MADE!

I use hay from a haybale.. not sure what kind iof hay it is... maybe timothy? One bale lasts a looong time..
He eats it too...

Why would you bed a rabbit hutch? When I had rabbits, I had wire cages and never used bedding at all. The rabbits did fine. On occasion I would give them a little alfalfa to chew on, but that was a snack, not bedding.

I'm planning on having a "box" on one end of our hutch for the rabbits so they can get out of the weather if need be and the floor will be solid. I'll probably put some straw in but I'm giving them a small cat litter box that will have shavings in it. If you do the same, just make sure you change it every day or every other day as they like to lay in it. Hay would work as well but have some up off the cage floor in a hay rack so if they pee on their bedding they still have fresh to eat.

Could I put plastic on top of the wood and then put bedding on top of that? Then the rabbits won't chew the wood.

Better to leave the wood plain. The plastic would be very bad for them if they swallowed it. They will chew no matter what, it's the only way to keep their teeth from getting too long. If you give them other pieces of wood to gnaw on, it should keep them from chewing on the bedding area, at least more than if they had nothing else.

I wonder if a cheap stall matt cut into the right size would work too??
Dont know if they'd chew the matt though...
