One of my chicks had yellow patches of thick buildup mostly around its butt however there’s some near its neck and under its wings too. Eating, drinking, and pooping normally. I have adult hens and have never seen this before. The other chick housed with this chick is not having the same issue. I was thinking maybe mites but idk because the other chick would probably have them. I was also thinking vent gleet but then the buildup under the wings and neck wouldn’t align with that would it?

Yikes! I don't know what that is or how to treat it, but I'm tagging some members who might:
@Eggcessive @Wyorp Rock

My first thought to treating that would be rub coconut oil all over it, but that's probably a bad idea. I had a guinea pig that had something that almost looked like that, though not quite, and putting coconut oil on her cured it. Is it flaky at all? Is it able to come off? Is it dry, hard, or oily or anything like that? If you took a warm, moist paper towel to wash/rub it off, does it come off? And if so, does it come back and how fast if it does? Does you chick have any other symptoms of anything?

I hope you'll be able to fund some help for your little chick and best of luck!

Thank you for the reply. It kind of reminds me of thick cradle cap. It does come off - in some places it’s more caked on and hard to get off. Chick seems pretty okay. Eating, drinking, pooping fine.

Welcome To BYC

Tagging @azygous too.

You mention this reminds you of Cradle Cap, then you may want to try treating as such.

I've never seen this on such a young chick but have ran across a few similar on juveniles to adult birds.
I don't know if anyone has found a remedy to really treat, but you could try giving a cleanup in Dandruff shampoo to see if that makes a difference.

For a chick this young to have a condition, it's hard to know what the outcome will be, if they will be able to thrive or if the condition will worsen.

Where did the chick come from?

Tsc ty for the reply 😭

I would try the coconut oil to see what that does. Keep the chick warm and don’t chill it. Could it be something from the egg or incubator? Or is the chick moving around or getting poop on it? I wish I had more advice.

Hey I’m trying coconut oil now. I didn’t hatch her from the incubator. Both chicks are almost 3 weeks old now. I was originally using olive oil on them for pasty butt so I’m wondering if it’s a reaction from that. Idk. She’s completely fine otherwise. They seem like their temp is comfortable. They have a brooder but they haven’t been under it a ton lately or huddled together and no excessive crying.

Did the patches appear after you applied Olive Oil or were they there already?

IF they only appeared after applying the Olive Oil, then I'd consider giving her a wash up and seeing if you can clear it up. Could be a reaction to oil.
