Benadryl to Euthanize Chicken?

A .22 bullet to the head is quickest, easiest, and painless.

Twice I've put one in a box with a hole in the top so their head pops out, then shoot at pretty close range with regular-shot 20-gauge shotgun. It takes their head off. Hubby recently just outright shot one. He was so ticked he ignored me and my box idea. I'm just afraid they'll not hold still. He got the head off with one shot.

I would never, ever experiment with methods. If I can't do it myself I will contact someone who can.
I had to cull two little pheasant chicks earlier this year and I brought them in to my local vet clinic - they were amazing. The care they put into first making sure they could not be saved and then reassuring me was above and beyond.
It cost me a full £3.50. That was well spent for my peace of mind.
I am aware for that sort of money they just took them out back and wrung their necks. No shots or gas or fancy, but they were kind and gentle with me and with the birds. I love my vets and would always choose them first.

I was imagining more blood and more squirming and noise from the bird. Thanks for the video.
As long as the bird is calm before being put in the cone, there's little to no squirming. Sometimes they will flinch alittle when they get cut, but it's not often.

I dig a hole and put the bird in the hole, since that's where it's going to be buried anyway.

We take the bodies downstream the creek a mile and let the animals have them.

If we dug a hole, a skunk or raccoon I bet would find it, although we do have a cat and two dogs buried here that nobody dug up. They were double-bagged, though, and very deep, so doh, suppose we could do that for the chickens too. Might give that a try!

Which vet did you use Chikalnu? I’m on the border of the Scottish Borders and haven’t found an avian vet yet. Was thinking of using the Dick vet.

I just went to my local Armac clinic here in Peebles. They have no specialized avian vets as far as I know, but they do farm animals. If you vant more expertise I'd think Dick vets is probably the place to go.

You can always give Armac a ring and see if they think they will be able to help you out. Will def. be cheaper than Dick. 🙂

Thanks. I think I’ll just use the Dick as they were good when our cat threw a clot and had to be seen OOH. It might not be a worry soon as I’m considering going back into vet nursing. Really humming and ahhing about that currently.
