So, we've had the little gosling for a week now and have decided to take the plunge. We've applied for a permit to make him legal. The next step is to get him a friend. Any ideas? I've heard ducks can be good companions, but would another goose be better? Even if it's not a Canada Goose?

Nope I suggest another gosling. They really do better with their own kind doesn't matter the breed of goose either. They speak the same language.
That's what I was waffling on. The difference between easy/good enough and hard/thriving....
He's probably a western Canada Goose (7-14 lbs). Would size be a consideration for breed of goose (or duck)?

Geese and ducks can be friends but if your goose is a gander and your duckling you get turns out to be a female there will be mating [no offspring] so you'd probably want to go with the large size ducks. Or vise versa on sexes.

Geese size well that would be your smaller geese like Chinese or even Toulouse there are many varieties that aren't large.

Here is a list of goose breeds maybe this will help you decide.

My Embden gander lived 5 yrs with only Muscovy's till I brought a female goose home poor guy didn't even know what a goose was.

If it were me I would try to find another gosling, preferably a small breed like Chinese. I had a lone gander once and he wasn't too happy with just ducks around. He was much happier when I got him another goose to graze with.

Where did you get the goose from ? And what kind of permit did you get to keep it ?state or federal?
