Please, show me pictures of your feeders and waterers that can be filled from outside the coop/run.

I'm involving my 7yo in the care of the chickens because he's enthusiastic about it and because he's old enough for a degree of supervised responsibility. But I don't want him opening doors and having the chickens get out.

And besides that, there will be times that I'll need to be feeding/watering chickens when already in my work clothes. So I want outside-fill feeders and waterers to replace the handing feeder and the double-walled, metal waterer up on blocks.

I'm particularly interested in seeing nipple drinker systems and feeders made of PVC pipe, please.

I am sorry I don't have pics but I've been wanting good no waste feeders too. Tried hanging gravity bucket feeder. Way too much feed waste. Made a pvc feeder saw this on line. Just typed in pvc feeders in search engine. It is simply a pvc with a ferret litter pan attached. Worked great until my 4 pullets started digging in it. More waste. So we attached on of those round metal feeders, the kind with the holes all around. Working much better but they still toss out feed with their beaks. But much much less waste. You could modify the top with an elbo joint leading to the outside and cap it to keep rain out. (Just a thought). I'm also wanting a good no waste waterer. I hate all the debre and feces getting into the water. Currently thinking about something beaktime.com sells. You might look there. People are great on this forum, I'm sure pics will be posted soon. Good luck.

Fill this feeder from outside, notice thr two opposing 45 degree pieces at the top sticking through the wire to the outside. Click on the picture and it'll get bigger.

This rainwater collection drum collects water, it doesn't have to be this big.

Feeds water to these horizontial nipples -best thing out there-- through the 3/4"black pipe.

Another one, The tidy cat bucket outside the pen,

Feeds a total of 9 Auto water cups in three connected pens.

The Tidy Cat bucket has a float that keeps it full from a 55 gal drum in the hay loft or you could hook a garden hose directly to the float (it'll handle the pressure) or you could let the seven year old check it and fill it with the hose or a bucket. Many, many options!

Anything else?

I recently changed from nipple waterers to cups because I had noticed when I had placed a pan of water in the outside run during some extreme hot weather the birds seemed to prefer the pan over the nipples. They had been using nipples from day 1. The open pan of water was, of course dirtied up as quickly as I cleaned it. I think they like the cups better than the nipples, they didn't have any trouble learning to use either.

5 gallon water cooler sits on top of the tractor. There's a shut off at the cooler & another at the cups to flush the lines. The coupling is just a male & female PVC hose fitting. I generally put a couple frozen water bottles in the cooler, they last about 24 hrs. Unfortunately although the water in the cooler stays nice & cool, the water in the plumbing does not, especially at 105+

I fill the feeder once a day but it would be easy enough to put a hopper in it but I intend try going to fermented feed 2x a day instead of the current 1x plus free choice pellets.

I have had waterer and feeder frustrations. My first plastic feeder fell apart. One of my peeps was running around with a washer in its mouth the others chasing her to get this shiney thing from her. 2nd feeder, another hanging feeder, they wasted food at a rapid rate. We made a pvc pipe feeder. Seems to be working out. The water situation, keeps getting dirty. I got one of those double walled galvenized wateres. Still got to lug it around but it was better until one peep decided she can stand on the thing, more dirty water. We hung a metal pan over it so they won't jump up on it. If this doesn't work I'll need to make something else maybe with the cup waterer. Ive got to get the feed and waterer situation under control before I go back to work. (School bus driver). Don't have a lot of money to deal with it.

My feeder and waterer update. My waterer seems to be doing its job. It's the top fill plastic waterer. I had a little trouble figuring out just how tight the lid should be but that's ok now. 3 gallons is pretty big for my 4 chickens so I just don't fill it full. I don't want to go that long without giving them fresh water. But I've solved the contamination issue. No more poop in the trough, whoot whoot! Made a pvc gravity feeder using a ferret litter pan. Worked great but they were still wasting feed. After a day they actually stood in it scratched food out. So I took a round metal feeder, the kind that can fit a mason jar and secured it to the pvc pipe. Just so happens I got the right size and its working great. They have to eat out of the holes and no digging in the food. There's still a little waste as the like to try to toss feed out with their beaks but its minimal compared to before. We had to move it once, against the siding as rain was getting in the dish. Can't have that. Now it stays dry. Finally got my feeding and watering issues figured out.
