Hello, I am on a limited income and I would love to start making quilts. Where is the cheapest/best place to buy fabric? I have a JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby, Walmart, and Hancock fabrics store near me and can purchase online also.

Thanks

I wish I had that many places to buy fabric near me! I like JoAnn's and Hancock. Never been to Hobby Lobby. If you go to Walmart, trust your instincts because I've had people show me some horrible quality stuff from there.

Buuuuuut, I'm biased because I work at JoAnn's. There are always coupons for them, you can sign up for them or get them from couponcabin.com. Anyway, happy sewing.

Those coupons are dangerous! I have to avoid giong into JoAnns because I'll come out with something whether I need it or not! Yeah, I know I'll need it someday, but I've got so many projects waiting now, I really don't need any more!

Around here my only options are Walmart and JoAnn's, I won't buy online because I have to feel and see the fabric in person, same thing with shoes, I have to try them on. I've found decent material at Walmart, just check the bolt ends for fiber content and after a while you do get a feel for good material.

My wife always used to go to Joann's, then they closed the store down... now she either buys at Walmart or makes the long trip to Hancock.

You could also try your local thrift store. I've bought yardage (about 8 yards) of fabric at one of my local Goodwill stores. & cheap. Of course it is hit or miss w/ choices or if they even have any fabric there.

Fabric.com has some good deals. Not a lot.
Also, on a sewing forum, some folks will purchase bed sheets at thrift shops to use for clothes. I'm not sure if that would work for quilting.

Look in your local newspaper for garage sales. In my neck of the woods, it is how some of shop. & folks here will advertise if they have fabric or sewing stuff at their garage sale.

Yes, thrift stores sometimes have great finds. We have a local discount fabric place and they get in really good varieties of of fabrics and it is so much cheaper than the other stores. I can get ribbon in there for 15 cents a yard when the same thing at Singer/other places is 1-1.50/yrd. I love that place.

We have a singer dealersip that sells awesome fabric. It is SO high though but it is good quality and they have such a selection of different in style fabrics.

Super Walmart has good stuff. Try ebay or google online fabric stores.

All good tips from the ladies! I love novelty quilts so I shop at Hobby Lobby with their 40% coupon--www.hobbylobby.com. Their fabric is always 30% off. I can buy as little as a 1/4 yard. I also live 50 miles from Hancocks. Their remnant table is $4.98. Most of it isn't my taste but occasionally I find a piece that sells for $8.98 on the bolt. They sell the bolt fabric minimum of 1/2 yard. Great store--a candy shop for the quilter!

I also shop at my local Singer store which has a wonderful selection. Prices are usually $5.98 and $6.98 and it is quality. I can tell by the feel. They are friendly and do long-arm quilting and have classes.

Thanks for all the tips.

I went to Joann's and bought some beautiful Calico Keepsakes when they were half off. I got 3 fabric, 3/4 y each for $6. There are so many pretty ones to choose from.

I will check out the sites, everyone listed.
