Black Broilers

Has anyone tried the black broilers from ideal poultry? What’s the timeframe on harvesting? What’s the flavor difference between the Cornish crosses? Do they get the same size?

I've never had the black broilers from Ideal, but have grown out other colored broilers and they all seem pretty similar other than color. Some, particularly the cockerels, will get nearly as big as a cornish cross in weight, but the meat is distributed differently because they have a longer frame and legs. Generally you'll get bigger thighs and drumsticks with darker meat than a cornishx and a little less breast meat. Personally I prefer the colored broilers, I think they have a lot more flavor. They are a good size by 12 weeks.
 
No, they are not really smaller. They are slower growing than CX, taking a few more weeks to reach processing size. The shape is different, more like a dual purpose bird than the thick, compact CX.
