In the Brooder
Hi! I'll probably make an introduction thread another time, but today we're so confused that I had to do this one first.
We got 3 chicks (EE, olive egger, black maran) last year for the first time. Neither my husband or I had any previous exp, though I have had many types of animals my whole life including birds. We figured it out as we went (with a lot of info from backyard chickens!!
)
All three chicks grew up fine, except my EE who ended up showing cross beak about at about a week old. We've been hand feeding and she's gained weight/started laying.
So anyway. My olive egger has been been consistently laying since about 7 mon old, almost every day, and they are, surprise, olive green. About two weeks after, my EE has been laying and hers are consistently pink (tho her first was kind of orange). We have been waiting for my maran to lay a brown egg, and last week she starting going SPLOOT! So we knew it was coming.
Now I'm at work this week, my husband tells me he saw our olive egger lay, took the egg, then a couple hours later a blue egg showed up. I was super surprised, and was googling everything about EE, seeing posts elluding possible liver problems with egg colour changes, etc. I heard a few stories about EE laying suddenly diff eggs, but this seemed extreme. The eggshell also was thick and bumpy, hers are always perfect.
I eventually just figured she had an off day, and would monitor. Next day she laid pink again. Okay. Now today, I go out in the morning. The olive egger is out of the coop, the other two are inside. They come out when they hear me. I look in, and there behold, two warm eggs. One pink and one blue.
Therefore I have no other leads. It's got to be my maran. I have not seen this discussed anywhere yet, but I'm looking for an answer. Do ppl cross marans with anything else? Could it be a dietary issue? She is a very picky eater even with treats. I don't know if I should be concerned!
Pictures attached.
