Picked up this little one yesterday. Seems to have hatched without eyes. Anyone successfully raise a blind chick? I’ve been syringe feeding so far.

Also what would cause a chick to hatch with their knee joint bending the opposite way? One leg was normal and the other was backward.

I’ll pick up sick chicks from my local feed store and try to save them. This is the first time it’s been for these hatch defects.

I bet if it doesn’t have to many other issues, it could probably surrvive as a blind chick. I would repeatedly show it the location of the food and water even if you are syringe feeding it so it can eventually learn. Other than that I’m not really sure. Very interesting and update to this thread what happens with it. Good luck!

I have been showing her the location and she does not seem to want to peck the ground/down. I’ve dipped her beak in the water dish too. I am going to try one of those water bottles you hang. She could not stand when I got her but she had to been eating drinking something because I got her two days after they noticed something wrong.

She’s has become stronger with frequent feedings and digestive enzymes (her crop remains full unless I help her out with digest- this was the same with the other chick with the backwards knee). She also has some vitamin deficiencies as she’ll turn her head to the side. So I’ve been giving her supplements. None of them seem to be sick though.

unfortunately the one with the backwards knee did not survive. :(

I raised a chick a few years ago who was blind, crossbeak and had a backwards leg. I believe she had some sort of internal problems as well because after a couple weeks she went suddenly into a coma state and passed. If your chick has no internal problems then I bet it can live a happy life with training and adjustment!

Have you used any saline or eye drops to see if her eyes are actually there or intact? Lain neosporin can also be used in the eyes. Chicks are targets for pecking of eyes by other chicks. So I would make sure that the eyes are not just closed or sealed from tears, and really not there.

There are no eyes at all unfortunately:/
