I cracked an egg this morning only to find it full of red liquid that looks like blood. The egg smelled fine, but was smaller than normal and the shell was a bit deformed.

Is this a cause of concern? All of my chickens seem healthy. I'm not sure who laid it, but I think it might be Gracie, my youngish barred rock/bielefelder hen. Her vent looks fine and she's acting normal. I've never had something like this happen before, so I just wanted to ask if it's normal. Thanks!

I am not sure but a site said that it is because a blood vessel ruptured while the yolk was forming. The site states it is natural so your hen is probably fine.

Check out the video in the following link for a good explanation.. Also see the explanation for blood spots near the bottom of the page in the same link.
