My Easter Egger laid an egg today that had blood on the outside of the shell. I have not seen this before. What caused this and should I be concerned? Thanks!
A blood smear on the eggshell IMO is usually caused by a chicken keeper who is being to kind to his or her hens. Hens carry most of their excess fat in a wad around their vent or egg port. This restricts the vent somewhat and results in eggs that are more difficult to deliver.
Although you could enroll your hen in a natural chick birth class, a better solution is a hen who is not too fat.
